Organic Cashew Certification: A Profitable Path for Tanzanian Farmers

The Organic Premium Opportunity

Certified organic cashews from Tanzania command $400–$700/MT premiums over conventional equivalents in European markets. For smallholder farmers earning $0.60–$0.80/kg for conventional RCN, the jump to certified organic can represent a 25–35% income improvement.

What Certification Requires

The main certifications relevant to Tanzanian producers are:

  • EU Organic (EC 834/2007) — required for EU market access
  • USDA NOP — required for the US market
  • Naturland / Demeter — premium niche certifications with higher prices

All require a 3-year conversion period during which synthetic inputs are prohibited but the premium is not yet available. Cooperatives often support members through this period with input credit.

Who Is Buying?

Active buyers of certified organic Tanzanian cashews include European health food distributors, organic supermarket chains (including in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK), and several US-based nut brands actively expanding their organic SKUs.

The Ruvuma Organic Cashew Cooperative (ROCC) achieved EU Organic certification in 2021 and immediately secured a 3-year off-take agreement. Their members earned TZS 1,800/kg for RCN in 2024, compared to the CBT floor price of TZS 1,200/kg for conventional.

Getting Started

Contact an approved certification body operating in Tanzania — Control Union, KIOF, and AfriCert all have active programmes. The Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM) can also provide guidance on group certification for cooperatives.
