Two Regions, One Industry
Mtwara and Lindi regions together account for approximately 65% of Tanzania's total cashew production. While they share a southern coastline and similar climate, there are meaningful differences that buyers and processors consider when sourcing.
Mtwara: Volume and Consistency
Mtwara is Tanzania's highest-volume cashew region, producing an estimated 85,000–95,000 MT of RCN in a good year. The red laterite soils of Mtwara Urban, Masasi, and Newala districts are well-suited to cashew cultivation. Large farmer unions with established processing infrastructure mean reliable supply chains.
Mtwara Port provides direct export access, reducing logistics costs for large volumes. The Newala Plateau sub-zone is particularly noted for low moisture content RCN due to its elevated position (850–950m).
Lindi: Quality Focus
Lindi's production is lower in volume but often achieves better kernel outturn ratios — the key metric for processors. Kilwa District, in particular, is known for producing RCN with 48–51 lbs outturn, compared to the national average of 44–46 lbs. Higher outturn means more kernel per tonne of shell nut, directly impacting processor margins.
Verdict
For large-volume procurement where consistency and logistics efficiency matter, Mtwara is the natural choice. For processors willing to pay a modest premium for quality outturn, sourcing from Lindi — particularly Kilwa and Liwale — can deliver meaningful yield advantages.
