Overview of Tanzania's Cashew Export Framework
Tanzania is Sub-Saharan Africa's largest cashew exporter, regulated by the Tanzania Cashewnut Board (TCB). All cashew exports require a valid export licence and compliance with quality, phytosanitary, and revenue requirements.
Step 1: Register with the Tanzania Cashewnut Board
Any entity wishing to export cashews must be registered with TCB as a licensed exporter. Requirements include: Certificate of Incorporation, TIN, and proof of processing or warehousing facility.
Step 2: Source and Grade Your Product
Cashew kernels must be graded by a TCB-approved grader. The grading report (form TCB-GR-01) is required for customs clearance. For RCN exports, a separate EWURA certificate for outturn ratio is required.
Step 3: Phytosanitary Clearance
The Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) issues a Phytosanitary Certificate. The product must be inspected at an approved facility. Allow 3–5 working days for inspection and certificate issuance.
Step 4: Book Freight and Issue Commercial Documents
Required documents for customs clearance and buyer payment:
- Commercial Invoice (in USD)
- Packing List (net/gross weight per lot)
- Bill of Lading / Airway Bill
- Phytosanitary Certificate
- TCB Grading Certificate
- Certificate of Origin (issued by TanTrade)
Step 5: Tanzania Revenue Authority Customs Declaration
File the export declaration via TRA's TANCIS system. Export levy on processed kernels is 0% (to encourage value addition). RCN export levy is currently set at 10% of CBT price.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Moisture content above 5% — will fail inspection
- Incorrect HS code — kernels (0801.32) vs RCN (0801.31)
- Late phytosanitary booking causing vessel misses
